ServiceM8’s journey began in 2009 when one of our founders, Kim Ford, bought a small locksmith business to keep himself busy after retiring from a successful career in corporate IT. However, he quickly encountered the challenges of running a field service business with paper-based systems and realized there were no suitable solutions available to help him better manage the business.
This got Kim thinking. He saw that businesses like his, with a mobile workforce and a high volume of smaller, shorter jobs, were disproportionately burdened by admin and inefficient systems that throttled productivity and professionalism. No matter the size of the job, the need for communicating with clients, quoting, scheduling, documenting, and invoicing remained overwhelmingly constant. It was a perfect recipe for burnout.
Around the same time, the advent of the iPhone, App Store, and cloud computing was revolutionising mobile software and connectivity. Kim saw an opportunity to take advantage of the newest technology and reduce administrative workloads for all small trades and services businesses like his.
Partnering with his son Ben, an accomplished software engineer, they designed a real-time, cloud-based solution for small businesses with mobile teams, with a focus on systemization and communication.
In 2010, the first version of ServiceM8 was released, offering an iPhone and web app to manage jobs from quote to completion. The response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive, with customers embracing the ability to work smart and simplify their workflows.
